As with many other medicinal plants, their users have often sought to experiment with a variety of different forms of ingestion in order to understand the plant, and its effects, better. While we commend the scientific and experimental spirit of these individuals and the resulting improvements in our understanding of these botanicals, this plant has a large enough record of use for these varieties of experiments to not be necessary, and we certainly do not condone them.
Over the past thousand years, many have decided smoke kratom in order to experience its efficacy, however, the benefits of this method of consumption are slim to none. In fact, it’s estimated that one would have to smoke around 15 to 25 grams, an extremely high kratom dose, in order to experience even the minimal effects of kratom that would be active orally at 1-2 grams.
Additionally, when you consider how much actual kratom plant material is needed, even getting extremely mild effects from smoking can take a massive toll on the lungs, making it hard to breathe. If done regularly, this could cause some very negative consequences, as the lungs are essential to health as they provide the necessary levels of oxygen that keep the body functioning.
As stated prior, it would take as much as 15-25 grams of kratom leaf in order to experience minimal medicinal effects. Additionally, as the half-life of mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine are quite short, one would need to be able to and be fine with smoking kratom, allwithin a one to two hour period, just to experience these effects, which would not be very enjoyable and would also waste a large bit of material.
In order to avoid have to smoke that much plain leaf kratom, some have tried smoking kratom resin, a concentrated kratom extract. However, from experiences we have found, this method is also quite ineffective in comparison to regular methods of use. Additionally, because most alkaloids break down in sufficient heat, the kratom resin would need to be vaporized in order to have any effect, however, even in this case it would only be around 20% as potent as regular methods of use.
Because of the large amounts of tar found in the kratom leaf, evidenced by the plant material percentages of kratom resin extracts, smoking kratom and extractions thereof are not only highly ineffective, but also unhealthy. The dangers of smoking tobacco are highly popularized, however, almost any herb smoking in the same quantities pose the same health risks including cancer of the lungs, esophagus and mouth. Additionally, as the lungs are one of the most essential organs, ensuring they function effectively is critical to maintaining good health in all areas. Because of this, nearly all of the medicinal benefits that this plant has are negated by these harmful effects.
We decided to post this article because of the various, “can you smoke kratom?” questions that have been posed to use and in general. If this article hasn’t convinced you not to try smoking kratom, we strongly suggest you do your own research, read kratom experience reports and consult experts in the area before trying this.

With current legislation pending, it seems kratom may no longer be legal in the United States. Although we haven't sold kratom directly in over a year, this legislation will negatively impact hundreds of thousands throughout the country. Please contact your local congressmen.
