The medicinal benefits of mitragyna speciosa are huge and varied, however, because of the plant’s psychological effects, many are curious whether this plant carries with it a hangover. Interestingly, according to Google’s Keyword Planner tool, the phrase “kratom hangover” is searched for hundreds of times each month.
Despite this query, hang over like effects from this plant are fairly unheard of with normal amounts of high quality kratom leaf. When taken in excess, however, there are a few, highly rare, symptoms that can be experienced and related to a kratom hangover. However, nearly anyone who uses the leaf in a moderate manner will never experience these effects.
While the side effects of excessive use are very dissimilar to a hangover, there are some kratom symptoms, such as nausea, that can resemble it. In order to get an understanding of these kratom side-effects, we have compiled a list of problems that can occur.
Something nearly every heavy kratom user has noticed, given they take sedative strains prior to bed, is that they are more likely to sleep in later and have a harder time waking up in the morning. While there are much worse things than sleeping in, it is something that should be noted prior to experiencing this kratom effect. The reason for this is still unknown, however, it is likely due to the effect that kratom, like any other substance that changes psychological state, has on sleep cycles. While there are no definitive studies on sleep cycles of heavy users vs non users, this seems to fit the data and contribute the sleepiness hangover effect. Additionally, because it can be relaxing and has antagonist effects on adrenaline receptors, it can diminish alertness upon waking, making it easier to fall back asleep after waking.
Nausea is the primary symptom of excessive kratom dosage and can be a sign that the amount being taken is much too high. However, nausea from kratom only effects a small portion of the population and is generally mild. There have been a few anecdotal reports of morning nausea after a day of use, but this is rare and may very likely be a result of other factors, or a combination of factors.
Headache is the hallmark of a headache, however, the headache that comes from excessive use has been described very differently than that of a hangover. Unlike the throbbing headache of a hangover, a “kratom hangover” headache is much more closer to lower head/neck tension, and is most common with large amounts of highly stimulating strain, such as maeng da kratom. Mild jaw tension, and very rarely teeth grinding, can accompany this neck/head ache.
A kratom hangover is something that nobody should fear, except for those who choose to take this plant in extreme doses, which is neither healthy nor smart.

With current legislation pending, it seems kratom may no longer be legal in the United States. Although we haven't sold kratom directly in over a year, this legislation will negatively impact hundreds of thousands throughout the country. Please contact your local congressmen.
