Throughout the past several thousand years, kratom has been used to great effect by populations throughout Southeast Asia and beyond. Because of this large history of use, we have discovered that this plant is one of the most medicinally useful plants available due to its powerful effects and range of applications, including pain relief, anxiety relief, immune system stimulation as well as kratom’s energy boosting effects.
Despite the rising popularity of kratom, it is still fairly obscure to most western countries; because of this, one of the most common questions asked on forums, and even to us, is “is kratom safe?” For those who are worried about the possibility of overdosing, then it is appears to be very safe, as there are no known kratom leaf overdose cases. However, although there have been no reports of overdose, there are a variety of other unpleasant side effects that come from consuming extremely high doses.
There have been no known cases of overdose with plain kratom leaf, however, theoretically there may be potential for overdose if one was to take a large dose of highly potent extracts, though no cases have been reported yet. One of the primary reasons that kratom leaf is much safer in this regard is because of the ridiculous amount of plant material that would need to be consumed in order to overdose, and it would be nearly impossible to keep from vomiting it all up before the kratom has been digested. Although it seems impossible to die as a direct result of leaf consumption, it still may be possible; because of this, we don’t condone kratom use, especially unsafe use.
Another interesting factor that keeps kratom safe is that it’s psychological, anxiolytic and potential euphoric effects have a definite ceiling effect, unlike opiates, where it becomes impossible to achieve these effects to a greater extent. The benefits of this are two-fold; the first benefit is that it is highly unlikely for a user to accidentally overdose from the plant and the second is that it keeps those with addictive personalities from being able to abuse kratom past a certain extent, as kratom tolerance increases the psychological and euphoric effects of kratom diminish.
Unlike many new pharmaceutical drugs that are put on the market with very limited testing done, kratom has thousands of years of experience from countless amounts of people, and nowhere do we seem to find any reasons to believe that it poses serious negative health effects, even after years of daily use.
Although the physical safety of kratom appears to be impeccable for a medicinal plant of its caliber, there are some problems that can occur with heavy prolonged kratom use. The biggest problem that can result from daily, heavy use is physical dependence. However, the physical dependence that kratom causes wouldn’t be considered severe in comparison to many other pharmaceuticals; even in the most heavy users, kratom withdrawal seems to cause no lasting physical or psychological harm, although it may be quite uncomfortable.
Thanks to the massive history of use, mitragyna speciosa seems to be quite safe, however, there are some side effects that can occur from regular use. Some of the most common of these side effects is what is known as the “wobbles,” which is difficulty in focusing the eyes often accompanied by a headache from eye strain. Nausea and constipation is common in some individuals as well, however, both seem to pass in a short period of time if used irregularly. The worst side effect, besides physical dependence, is seen in those who have used kratom daily for 20+ years, which is characterized by mild skin “blotches” that are a shade lighter than the skin. However, this has only been reported in a sensationalist manner, and if it is true, it seems to be very rare and may not even be a result of kratom leaf, though it is worth noting.
In comparison to the powerful medicinal properties of kratom, evidence seems to suggest that kratom is quite safe. However, although it is safe, it is essential to be moderate and do thorough research on kratom safety and dosage if using the plant at all in order to ensure health and happiness long-term. To answer the question, is kratom safe, the answer is mixed — in comparison to other plants with similar effects, it is extremely safe, however, anything can be bad if put into the wrong hands.

With current legislation pending, it seems kratom may no longer be legal in the United States. Although we haven't sold kratom directly in over a year, this legislation will negatively impact hundreds of thousands throughout the country. Please contact your local congressmen.
